Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) have identified disaster management awareness as a priority area needed to help communities prepare for natural disasters. The senior level Emergency Preparedness Working Group (EPWG) of APEC will hold its 14th meeting on 17-18th September in Kokopo Papua New Guinea in which participating economies will present on ideas to effectively address the information gap and to find solutions to prepare communities on disaster management at the community level. The EPWG is required to report to the APEC Meeting in November in Papua New Guinea on this priority. To provide feedback to the EPWG, the Government of Papua New Guinea, through CCDA as co-chair of the APEC EPWG, invited USAID Climate Ready, SPREP, PNG Media Council, and broadcasting station FM100 to partner on organizing a national workshop, from 1-3 October for media stakeholders to improve their understanding of disaster management and climate change for effective media reporting.
The expected outcomes of the workshop are:
To improve understanding of local media in Papua New Guinea of technical information on disaster management and climate change;
To improve ways of communicating technical disaster management and climate change information that best inform decision makers;
To improve quality, quantity and transparency reporting of disaster management and climate change issues of the APEC meeting by local media; and
To promote ownership of disaster management, climate change and environment media information and drive the issue of disaster management and climate change forward and beyond APEC
