The SIDS Decarbonization and Environment Forum: Accelerating Sustainable Futures was held on 19–20 February 2026 in Palau. It was organized by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan, the Government of Palau, the International Renewable Energy Agency, and the Green Climate Fund. The forum brought together Small Island Developing States (SIDS), partners, and climate organizations to discuss climate action and clean energy, in which the Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA) represented Papua New Guinea.
In the forum, the countries shared that climate change is already affecting them through sea-level rise, stronger storms, flooding, drought, and impacts on fisheries and agriculture. Many SIDS also face energy challenges because they rely heavily on imported fuel.
Participants stressed the need for more and easier access to climate finance. Many countries said current funding processes are complex and slow, and that more grants, technical support, and simpler procedures are needed.
The forum also highlighted the importance of partnerships to support renewable energy, climate-resilient infrastructure, better waste management, and stronger climate monitoring systems.
Overall, the forum emphasized that SIDS want to lead climate solutions, not just deal with climate impacts, and that stronger support and financing will help them move toward low-emission and climate-resilient development.
