Papua New Guinea is ranked as one of the most vulnerable countries globally to the impacts of climate change and has also been one of the more active in lobbying for improved finance for development countries as well as recognition of the value of it’s natural asstes in, particular forests,as key tool in the fight against climate change.
This year’s COP 30 in Belem, Brazil, Prime Minister,the honourable James Marape,restated the access to climate finance for developing and emerging economies like PNG while also committing PNG to take further action on maintaining it’s forests and accessing results based finance linked to them through both the jurisdictional carbon crediting standard ART- TREES and through engagement in the new Tropical Forests Facility(TFFF).
The two days session was officially opened by Ms.Debra Sungi acting Managing Director,CCDA she warmly welcomed all the stakeholders that were present.
Mentioned that the next two days focus will be on: 1. Available Forest Finance Options
- National Climate Finance Strategy.
In order to access Climate Finance,the National Climate Finance Strategy must be established. She reiterated that the strategy provides a clear road map on the available financial mechanisms to tap into mobilization of climate finance.
She also mentioned that CCDA has established a Climate Finance Unit,which it’s focus is to drive different finance mechanisms.
She also opened the morning session prior to presentations.
In her remarks,she acknowledged the CCDA board members present, she also acknowledged the Development Partners,the Key Government agencies,the NGO Forcert, Research Institute and Academia and the Private sectors representatives in the room.
She commended CCDA with sector agencies and partners who were involved in the process of bringing climate finance domestically,hence readily available for PNG.
She acknowledged the participation of High Level at COP 30, with commitment and pledged by Prime Minister Honourable James Marape, for PNG to join the Tropical Forest Forever Facility(TFFF), and key announcement for PNG to submit emissions reduction crediting period of 2017-2022, on ART- TREES Registration Document/Platform. Also, the available markets that PNG can tap into different market options through the National Climate Finance Strategy.
