Pacific Island countries are experiencing the negative impacts of climate change such as rising sea level, increasing drought and storm frequency and intensity, ocean acidification, and consequent damage to coral reefs and fisheries. Preparing for and responding to climate change impacts places additional pressures on existing funding sources and government structures. Many governments within the Pacific region seek support to address these negative impacts. USAID’s Climate Ready project will help Pacific Island countries to become more climate resilient and to better protect the lives and livelihoods of their citizens.
Objectives: Climate Ready will work with Pacific island governments and regional stakeholders to:
- draft and implement policies to achieve national adaptation goals;
- access and utilize international sources of climate financing; and
- improve systems and expertise to better manage and monitor adaptation projects. It will build on and leverage similar work that is already underway. The outcome of Climate Ready will help countries develop in accordance their national adaptation strategies.

Objectives: 1. To ensure the food security of the Wamira community by supporting the maintenance of their unique traditional irrigation system and through sustainable agriculture development;
2. To increase the resiliency of a highly vulnerable community in Kiriwina through the development of a local land use plan, with a particular focus on food and water security.

The BRCC is a USD 27.29 million pilot programme that the Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA) will be implementing over six years (from 2016 to 2021), through a grant from the Climate Investment Fund (CIF) to the Government of PNG, which will be administered by the Asian Development Bank.
The aim of the BRCC is to mainstream climate resilience into development plans to address country priorities that focus on vulnerable communities. The programme is funded by the Climate Investment Fund (CIF).

Objectives: The overall objective is to support the socio-economic development of three rural communities in the Rigo District: Imuagoro, Keapera and Kalo villages and to reduce their vulnerability against climate change impacts through the provision of reliable, integrated water and sustainable energy. At national level this objective will contribute towards fulfilling PNG’s commitment to the Kyoto Protocol.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) has one of the most significant areas of largely-intact tropical forest in the world, although these forests appear to be facing acute and imminent threats. Forests are also a vital resource for the local population particularly in the remote rural areas of PNG, providing food, fibre, building materials, and support a variety of wildlife and ecosystem services.
A mechanism for Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+) being developed through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) provides an opportunity to support PNG’s efforts to reduce levels of deforestation and help to maintain and protect its natural forest.
PNG has been a leading proponent of REDD+ at the international level and has made significant progress towards developing the capacity to engage in an international mechanism on REDD+. This progress has initially been supported by the UN-REDD Programme and is now being aided by the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) through a project that will run until the end of 2020.
Objectives: The project aims to contribute to the development of PNG’s capacity to design a sound national REDD+ strategy, develop and sustain national readiness management arrangements, develop the REDD+ implementation framework, and assess potential social and environmental impacts from REDD+ so that, by 2018, PNG is ready to implement policies and measures to reduce emissions enhance removals of GHGs from its forests under the UNFCCC REDD+ mechanism.

Being ready for REDD+ is a precondition for Papua New Guinea to move to the next phase of REDD+, that is, to implement REDD+ Policies and Measures to effectively reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and promote the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks. Successful REDD+ implementation, in terms of reduction in Greenhouse Gas emissions from the forest sector, will also enable PNG to access results-based payments through the UNFCCC in the future.
Building upon the earlier REDD+ readiness efforts, the main goal of the FCPF II project is to enable the continuation of support to PNG’s REDD+ Readiness Phase, to strengthen capacities for the efficient management of REDD+, to develop a National REDD+ strategy, support the continuation of the country’s considerable achievements on National Forest Monitoring System, Forest Reference Emissions Level and safeguards, and to increase engagement of diverse stakeholders (government, private sector, NGOs/CSOs and academia) in this process.
Objectives: It will also support the objective of REDD+ readiness funding in PNG, which is:
•to contribute to the development of PNG’s capacity to design a sound national REDD+ strategy, develop and sustain national readiness management arrangements, elaborate REDD+ strategy options, develop the REDD+ implementation framework, assess social and environmental impacts so that, by 2020, PNG is ready to implement policies and measures to reduce emissions from its forests and to enhance removals under the UNFCCC REDD+ mechanism.
